My Architect and Me

So, what is it? Practical decisions, exactly what you want, more bang for your buck? Well, no, not exactly. Joy, excitement, the unexpected… that’s more like it.

So, why appoint an Architect? We often describe deciding on the right Architect as choosing an artist to paint your family portrait. You have to like their style, their view on the world and be in sync with their moral and ethical ambition. The same goes when choosing the right Architect for you. They will be helping you to design where you live, raise your family, your place, the place where you can be you and that portrays you. They will capture something of you in a way that you couldn’t see yourself, which when brilliantly done, reveals an aspect of you that you didn’t realise existed or even what it may look like.

So, when you are considering on appointing the right Architect for you, don’t choose the first Architect that walks in the door. Think, do I feel comfortable with this Architect, do they understand what I am asking them to do, are they engaging, do I like their ambition, can they take what I’m asking them to the sublime…do I like these people. Previous work is an obvious indicator of whether you may be in tune with a particular Architect. But what is it about their portfolio that you like? Is it the final product, the curated photographs, is it the process of how the project was designed or the thought process behind the final design. Beauty is not always in the end product, it is in the process, the collaboration, the collection of creative thoughts, the ambition and the story. The decision should be made on a instinct, not necessity. Projects often span over well over a year from conception to completion, so it is imperative that the relationship is two directional; you choose your Architect and your Architect chooses you.
